MAMMS Project

Portability in this project comes from a script that replaces ArcView's project.save script. This is an advanced topic. See http://arcscripts.esri.com/ for more information.
All you really need to know about it is that it makes it possible to move your project (with the data) from one location to another (e.g. from one hard drive to another or from one computer to another). You must still keep all the data in the same folder(s) relative to the location of the project (*.apr file). You can get a copy of a blank project file here or from my GIS Information and Support page.

Create a new layout and put all the charts in the layout as follows:
1. On the project window, select "Layouts".
2. Click the "New" button (a new layout "Layout1" opens).
3. Click the last button on the right on the toolbar (toolbar is the bottom row with only 8 buttons). A whole list of choices should pop up stemming from that button.
4. Select the Chart Frame (5th one).
5. Drag a box on the Layout page and then you'll be prompted for which chart to add.
6. adjust layout settings and print the layout.

The data is all there.
1. Select and highlight the MBSS layer (like Benthic IBI in lesson 1 or 2 or MBSS Select in Lessons 3 & 4).
2. Open the Table.
3. Go to the Table Menu (Table ... Properties).
4. Note that all the fields are listed below. All that are checked are visible while those that are not checked are not visible. Simply check the fields that you want to show up and uncheck those that you want to keep hidden.

Follow these steps:
1. Highlight your shapefile.
2. Turn on the Projector Extension (File – Extensions – Projector Extension).
3. Run the Projection Utility Wizard by going to the File Menu and selecting "ArcView Projection Utility".
4. Select your shapefile ( * you can browse to one if you don't already have it in a view).
5. Click Next.
6. Select the input coordinate system. (When using a file created with our handheld GPS units This should be as follows:)
Coordinate System Type: Geographic
Name: GCS_North_American_1983[4269]
Units: Degree[9102]
7. Click Next and then click yes when the message pops up asking you to save the current projection definition to the original shapefile.
8. Select the "new" coordinate system for your output shapefile(s). Make the selection as follows:
Coordinate System Type: Projected
Name: NAD_1983_Maryland[26985]
Units: Meters[9001]
9. Click Next
10. Browse to a location to save your shapefile (or use the default "Newshape.shp").
11. Click Next.
12. Review the projection information if you want ... then click "Finish".
13. The projection utility will then process your shapefile. You must click OK when it is done, then it asks you if you want it added to your current view. If you say yes, it makes you browse for the file, which you then select and then it will ask you which view to add it to.

The answer is yes ... there is a way but it is sort of an advanced topic.

If there are enough requests for it, I'll make a project file that incorporates this (similar to the portable project file). This will make it so that the user will have to click directly on the feature and only one feature at a time can be identified. Send me an email if this is something that you want. It might take me all of 15 minutes to create this.

You can download the DNR Garmin Extension. I will add instructions for doing this soon.
If you have your coordinates in a file (like a spreadsheet), you can follow the instructions in one of these files.
NOTE: to download using MS Internet Explorer, right click and select "save target as". In Firefox, you can right click and select "save link as".
